Happy Hanukkah!

A Beginner's Guide to Hanukkah
By Jonathan Safran Foer

CHRISTMAS -- Christmas is a holiday that Christian children have been given to celebrate because they aren't Jewish. Instead of eight nights of presents, there is only one. And instead of getting to eat delicious and nutritious latkes, they are forced to drink something called nog, which isn't even a real word. They touch each other's sweaters while they sing together around pianos, they get into ''the spirit,'' and here's another bad thing about Christmas that should make Jewish children excited about celebrating Hanukkah: Christmas trees are terrible fire hazards.

SANTA CLAUS -- Santa Claus is an obese fictional being who supposedly ''visits'' Christan homes the night before Christmas for the alleged prpose of delivering ''presents'' to ''children'' who have been ''good'' the previous year. It's a bit pathetic that Christian chi9ldren are fed this lamemake-believe, instead of having a really interesting true hero like Hanukkah Harry.

HANUKKAH HARRY -- Hanukkah Harry is a real person who drops in on Jewish homes each of the eights nights of Hanukkah to delivr gifts that are in no way dependent on children's good behavior. Harry spends the off-season in Florida, Keeping out of the sun and faxing missives to Jewish craftsmen in Vietnam to make more dreidels. On Hanukkah nights, Harry flies through the sky in a 1991 Volve 240 wagon (Champagne exterior, mocha interior), pulled by his legal team of Schlepper, Pischer & Blintzes.

MISTLETOE -- It's hard for anyone, especially those of us who wore aviator glasses in high school, to find a problem with mistletoe. (Allergies aside.) Which is why Hanukkah Harry invented it in the first place.

LATKES -- Latkes are a kind of oil, into which small quantities of shredded potatoe have been infused.

HANUKKIAH -- A hanukkiah is like a menorah, but with room for eight candles. Or is it nine? An object of supreme importance, the hanukkiah is passed down from generation to generation and is sometimes the only item in a jew's suitcase. If you don't have the firmest of grasps on the supreme importance of the hanukkiah, you should buy your children very expensive gifts this year. And if you don't have children, would it kill you to have some?Someone needs to inherit the hanukkiah.

TWICE-A-YEAR JEWS WHO ARE ONCE-A-YEAR CHRISTIANS -- There is a certain kind of Jew who, despite knowing that Christmas is simply isn't his holiday, and that it would severly distress his relatives (particularly the dead ones) if he acknowlaged feelings of Christmas Envy, much less acted on them, get a Christmas tree anyway. And does the leaving-a-cookie-out-for-Sants thing. And the sweaters and nog. But of course he never lets any of it interfere with the Hanukkah celebrations, whatever they are. And you have to admit, ''Silent Night'' is a seriously beautiful song.
Then one day this twice-a year Jew who is a once-a-year Christian walks in on his children talking about Baby Jesus. So he sends them to Hebrew school, whee over time, they learn Christmas Envy. And the cycle repeats itself.

CHRISTMAS TREE -- Christians chop down trees to make houses to put trees in. The absurdity of this need not be elaborated on. Which is not even to mention that they hang perfectly dry socks over the fireplace, and rack up enormous electricity bills with the lights they put outside their houses. That's right, outside their houses.

KWANZAA -- No one is quite sure just what Kwanzaa is.

DECORATING THE HOUSE -- While Christmas decorations are recognizable and straightforward -- mistletoe, a tree, red-and-green knee socks above the fireplace -- no one has figured out how to decorate a Jewish home on Hanukkah. Some might say that the hanukkiah is decorations, but it isn't; the hanukkiah is a ceremonial object, with specific, non-decorative purposes. Perhaps the Stars of David that many string about are appropriate Jewish decoration? They are blatant imitations of Christmas decorating. Dreidels? They're toys. Latkes? They're food. What does it tlook like to celebrate Hanukkah?

This oses the larger problem of Jewish decorating: What does a Jewish home look like? How can a Jew indetify without resorting to imitation, kitsch or the display of celemonial objects? With Chagall prints on the walls? With trinkets bought in Israel when it was hard to go to Israel? With the Philip Roth backlist on the shelf? This paper on the stoop every morning?
Is it necessary to decorate at all?
And if not, what do we do with that feeling of necessity?

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT -- The following Christmas carols were written by Jews: ''O Holy Night'' (Adolphe Adam), ''Christmas Song'' (Mel Torme), ''White Christmas'' (Irving Berlin), ''Let It Snow, Let It Snow'' (Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne), ''Silver Bells'' (Jay Livingston and Ray Evans), and ''Rodolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'' (JohnnyMArks). The Grinch in ''The Grinch That Stole Christmas'' WASN'T Jewish, but the composer, Alber Hague, was. No one has contributed more to Christmas spirit than the Jews. We contributed the birthday biy himself, for God's sake.
Window displays are always more attractive than the gifts you receive -- even if you receive what was in the window. Jews engage Christmas in its ideal form: for the outside. Unspoiled by family friction, or commerce, or anxiety about the wrong gift, we can experience the purest spirit. Someone else's spirit that we compose music for. And look at from the other side of the window. Christians should envy us envying them.

HANUKKAH SPIRIT -- Hanukkah spirit is the Christmas spirit as experience by Jews.

HANUKKAH GUILT -- You don't pay enough attention to your grandparents, or your parnts, or spouse, or siblings, or children or dog. Or yourself, for that matter. Your life has no meaning. You can't even remember just what, exactly, a hanukkian is, even though one was schlepped acre=oss an ocean for you.

HANUKKAH GELT -- The only known antidote to Hanukkah guilt.

THE GREAT MIRACLE THAT HAPPENED THERE -- In the second century before the Common Era, the Maccabees led a rebellion against the Greek occupiers. Against all odds, and outnumberes 20 to 1, the scrappy band of Jews was victorious. The temple in Jerusalen was reclaimed, and the hanukkiah (then known as a simple menorah) was lighted in celebration, using the scant oil that was found lying around. It shouldn't have been enough to burn through the night, but when the sun rose the next morning, the flame was still going strong. It burned through the third night, and the fourth and the fifth. The oil lasted eight nights. A great miracle happened there.

THE GREAT MIRACLE, CONTINUED -- It lasted a ninth night, and a 10th and a 20th. After a month, the hanukkian began to melt under the heat of the miracle it proclaimed. It spilled over the bimah and onto the floor. The fire spread, Hallelujah! The stained-glass windows were illuminated to those standing outside, watching the miracle engulf and swallow the building, and those trapped within it. The fore spread -- the chosen people, we are a light unto the nations! -- and has yet to be stamped out in many places. It is unknown just when we can be expected to get back to normal, non-miraculous living.

DREIDEL -- The dreidel is a spinning toy, painstakingly fashioned out of plastic polymer by Jewish craftsmen in Vietnam. Used for tabletop gambling games during Hanukkah, the dreidel often ends up on the floor and sometimes in the dog's small intestine. There is a Hebrew letter on each of the dreidel's four sides. These letters abbreviate the statement: Spin it again. You have no idea what is means. You spin it again. You try to make sense of it. Spin it again? You spin it again.

THE MYSTERIES OF HANUKKAH -- What, exactly, does the dreidel have to do with Hanukkah? Why is Hanukkah celebrated like this only in the United States? Why is Hanukkah a minor holiday and not a High Holy Day, and why are we proud of that, and why don't act we act as though it's minor, and why are we worried about decorating our homes? Is it possible to celebrate Hanukkah without succumbing to imitation, kitsch or commerce? Is there anything morally inconsistent, as Jews and as American, in celbrating a holiday that is ostensibly about the removal of occupiers? Could Hanukkah exist without Christmas?

Like all Jewish Myusteries, the mysteries of Hanukkah can be taken in one of two ways: they can serve either to undermine or sustain. The questions frustrate some to the point of walking away. Some find resolution in the questions themselves.

List No.1

Every single year up until last, I've made a Christmas wish list. And usually, these wish lists are about 5-7 pages long consisting of clothes, shoes, perfumes, purses, jewelry, hair products, hair tools, iPods, laptops - pretty much anything a girl could wish for. My parents hate when I give them a list because they say "it ruins the surprise because you already know what you're getting." So last year when the holidays rolled around, I decided that I would bring back the element of surprise and not make a list. Let me tell you - it was a BIG mistake; I ended up with a powder blue, cable knit sweater, some sort of book and a bunch of stuff that I'm sure is still sitting in a corner somewhere collecting dust. This year, to ensure a repeat doesn't happen, I'm making lists! Lists with pictures, prices, sizes, colors and I might even throw in a map to each store. Realistically, I can break it down into two stores - Aritzia and Holt Renfrew.

Aritzia:
- T.Babaton Watson Cape
- Talula Kent Blazer
- Wilfred Azania Kimono
- T. Babaton Deuce Long Sleeve Tshirt
- Gift Card

Holt Renfrew:
- Marc by Marc Jacobs Too Hot To Handle
- Frye Melissa Button Boots
- Christian Louboutin Double Platform Pumps/Volpi
- Gift Card

Other:
- Jennifer Zeuner Large Swirly 3 Initial Pendant
- Cocktail Ring
- Scarf

Mom and Dad, if you come across my blog, please print this!
Happy Shopping.

I come, I conquer

"In life we do things; some we wish we had never done, some we wish we could replay a million times in our heads. But they all make us who we are and in the end, they shape every detail about us. If we were to reverse any of them, we wouldn't be the person we are. So just live, make mistakes and have wonderful memories. But never, ever second guess who you are, where you have been and - most importantly - where it is that you're going."

This quote was a good reminder to me, especially since I've been going through some hard times lately. You may have noticed that I haven't been posting as much but I'm back at it now. Not to sound cliché but what doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. And it sometimes helps you step back and reassess your life. Not everyday is going to be rainbows and butterflies but the strength we find within ourselves to carry on and pull through is what makes us who we are. When life knocks you down and sets you back, you have two choices - let it keep you down or get up and conquer.

Gimme gimme

1. Lanvin. Embroidery Ballet Flat
2. Tom Ford. Private Blend Lipstick Nude Vanilla
3. Marc by Marc Jacobs. Bianca Leather Clutch
4. Deborah Lippmann. Glitter In The Air
5. Robert Geller. David Reading Glasses
6. Stella & Dot. Soiree Pearl Pave Bracelet
7. Zara. Angora Beret
8. Juicy Couture. Bows for a Starlet

Gimme, gimme never gets. Don't you know your manners yet? Well, in this case it does! My birthday and Christmas are both coming up and last year I made the mistake of not making a wish list. Lesson learned. [I won't be doing that again - unless I want nothing.] This year I'm planning ahead and I'm being specific; sizes, store names, colors, styles, etc. I may even map out where each store is so my mother and father have NO excuse as to why they weren't able to find something. Here are a few things on my list that you may want to add to yours as well. Also, if your parents are anything like mine - pictures help!

Timmy's Christmas Telethon

Hi Everyone,

On December 4th, 2011 the BC Lions Society is hosting their annual Christmas telethon which airs on SHAW and its affiliate stations throughout British Columbia. This is something that I am so incredibly honored to participate in. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the BC Lions Society, they are a registered charitable organization dedicated to enriching the lives of children with disabilities by promoting self esteem, confidence and independence. The funds that are donated to this charity go towards specialized services like the Easter Seals Camps, Easter Seal Houses, the Lions Laser Skin Care Centre, Patient Care Grants and the Lions Vancouver Hospital Helipad. They also assist in funding college scholarships to support youth with disabilities to further their education.

I ask that you join me in helping the kids by donating to Timmy’s Christmas Telethon. I will be part of a panel from 4 – 5pm; please call and give your support to a child in need. I strongly encourage you to watch as there will be an opportunity to see the kids you are helping. Together, we can help these children focus on their abilities rather than their disabilities; something every child deserves.

Sincerely,

Rachel Meyers

Seafood for breakfast?

This morning I stopped by The Boathouse in Port Moody. The view of Burrard Inlet on a brisk but sunny morning is absolutely breath taking. So, it wasn't exactly breakfast but brunch. Regardless of what it's called, I had never eaten seafood before the P.M. hours before. I must say, I quite liked it. Lobster-Eggs-Benny FTW!

Eat, drink and be merry!

I've been so blessed to be the type of person that doesn't stress easily or let 'things' phase me often. Some people might not necessarily see it as a good thing but I think it's a great thing! Although, my spontaneous, carefree, careless, type B personality can sometimes get me into trouble [a lot of trouble], for the most part, I'm a positive person. However, I'm still human; I have feelings and I feel pressure! With work piling up, trying to figure out school in the Spring, finding a house and regular day to day crap that every twenty year old has to deal with, I finally cracked. BUT lucky for me, a bad day can be turned right around with a little shopping, a box of Parisian macarons, a big bottle of wine and dinner with good company!

On Friday evening while browsing Holt Renfrew for a new purse, I came across a delicious [literally] pop up shop - Kitchening with Carly. I had been meaning to try Carly's macarons for a while so you can only imagine my delight to see a plethora of these beautiful, pastel-colored desserts right in front of me. I couldn't help but purchase a 12 pack and devour the entire box not even 10 minutes later; my two favorites are Pistachio and Raspberry-Lemon. After nearly spoiling my dinner with the glorious desserts, I headed to Cioppino's Mediterranean Grill & Enoteca with a few friends. I don't think I can rave enough how amazing the food was. We had Proscuitto di Parma, Carpaccio, Calamari, Roasted Rack of Lamb and Duck...Duck... paired with dirty martini's [extra olives, extra juice] and a bottle or two... or three of Errazuriz Max Reserva 2007. Everything was absolutely immaculate. Chef Pino Posteraro even personally made us a round of 'Burt Reynolds' and jauntily stopped by our table; it was truly a wonderful night making me completely forget about the havoc I had been dealing with only a few hours prior.

On the hunt

As you may already know, I am on the hunt - for a house! So far it has been a very exciting, nerve racking, stressful and enticing experience. I began looking for humble abodes thinking it was going to be a breeze and that I would fall in LOVE with the first place I set my eyes on but it definitely hasn't been easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy... I have yet to find a place and my time crunch is getting tighter. Not only have I not settled on a house, I haven't even settled on a city! At least not every decision is a tough one. Putting together the perfect outfit for this coming Sunday's House Hunt was nearly effortless. I chose jeans and a cardigan because I want to be comfortable while still looking put together. If I were fully going for comfort I would probably show up to meet with the realtor in sweatpants but there's a good chance he'll be wearing a suit; even if I didn't just roll out of bed, compared to him it will look like I had. Next, I chose loafers. These are my favorite style of shoes at the moment so maybe I am biased and trying to wear them with everything but how can you not adore these shoes? They're like the fancy version of slippers! Lastly, I've dressed up my look with some statement jewelry and added a structured bag [because I am here for BUSINESS]. Now I'm just praying that the weather holds up so I won't have to sub my loafers for rain boots!

Pumpkin + Papaya Face Mask

I came across this DIY pumpkin and papaya face mask so I'm going to try it out this weekend. It will be a great way to use up my left over pumpkins from Halloween; I just have to makesure papaya's are still in season!

List it out

I love lists! I seriously write, type and plan everything out. If you saw my work desk you would think I have some sort of list-disorder. Since I'm going to be in school next semester, I need to learn how to be money-savvy. To prevent mindless spending, I've decided to create a visual list of things I plan to purchase and then prioritize them by labelling each either 'need' or 'want'. To ensure that I'm not cheating myself by saying I need everything that I want, I've thought up reasons for why each is labelled the way it is.

Need. Red lipstick. Because - at the moment I am scrounging out the last bit of my MAC Red with a q-tip and a red lipstick is a must have in every girl's makeup bag.
Need. Baggy sweater. Because - Winter is just around the corner. It's time to trade in my tanks and tee's for something a little more weather appropriate.
Want. Striking beret. Because - I would like another beret/beanie in a bright color except I already have like ten sitting in a drawer somewhere. [Unnecessary purchase.]
Want. House Of Harlow earrings. Because - I could do without a new pair of earrings. I usually just wear studs anyways.
Want. MK tortoise ring. Because - I have a bunch of rings that I barely wear; they interfere with my typing and while I'm a working woman, I type all day. [Not practical.]
Need. Canada Goose HyBridge Lite jacket. Because - once again, Winter is coming! I don't want to freeze to death - hense this ultra soft, goose down, flexible, breathable, form-fitting jacket. I'm going to vouch twice for this jacket because I truly think that everybody needs one of these to make it through a Canadian winter. Sometimes a leather jacket, a cotton bomber and a cashmere peacoat just don't suffice.
Need. Thermal pants. Because - right now I sleep in a boy's graphic tee. I'm not too sure if these are actual pants or if they're for lounging. Regardless, I think they make for cute pajamas. [I know I swung this one to a need but I actually don't own pajama pants, therefore, this is a need.]
Want. Prada Candy frangrance. Because - I just purchased Viktor Rolf's Flowerbomb literally two days ago. To purchase another fragrance right now [no matter how beautiful it smells] would be excessive.
Want. Nail Polish. Because - I still have nail polish that I haven't even opened yet. Until I use the rest at least once, I am not allowing myself to purchase another.
Want. Justin Bieber Under The Misletoe. Because - Christmas is still two months away. Come December and this will become a 'need' but until then, it can wait.
Need. Lanvin flats. Because - I actually do need a new pair of simple, black, ballet flats. These shoes aren't exactly cheap but I think that if you're going to invest in something, it should be something that you're going to get good use out of. I could literally go on all day about how great these flats are but you won't ever fully pick up what I'm putting down until you go stick your feet in a pair of these. The best way I can think to describe it is the comfort of an Ugg boot with the impecable style of a Louboutin shoe.

Well, now that my LIST is done, it's time for the best part - shopping!

Happy Rosh Hashanah!

HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH! Technically, I should have been wishing you all this last night at sundown but I've been busy. [Although, 'busy' is never a good excuse.] However, I've wished you a happy holiday now so all is forgiven. Since it's the beginning of a new year, we get to make some resolutions:

1) Get educated - I'm well on the way to that.
2) Get active - The goal is to workout at least 4 times a week.
3) Go green - aka reduce, reuse and recycle.
4) Travel - NYC is next on the list.
5) Become a 'better' person.

Well, that's all I have time for. Off to eat some apples and honey.
L'Shana Tovah, my loves.

Krazy For Keith

Howdy, howdy! I have converted into a Country lover! Well, let's not go too far... But to say the least, Keith Urban rocked Rogers Arena last night! Before last night, to call myself a fan would be a lie. However, I am proud to admit that I am now crazy for Keith! The concert was beyond amazing; not only because he is so talented but because he interacts with his audience SO well [he even brought fans on stage and gave a girl his guitar!] Out of all the concerts and shows I have been to, this was by far one of the best!  PS. I touched him.

Go Team

Go Canucks Go! Tonight I was at a pre-season game between the Vancouver Canucks (my home team) and the San Jose Sharks. [Talk about a little fish-on-fish action.] Unfortunately, we suffered a 4-3 loss BUT it was still a great game. It was nice to see our 4th string get some playing time as well. I can't think of a better ending to Sunday Funday than supporting my team, drinking a little beer and eating a few french fries. I'm excited for the upcoming season!

One Sweet Weekend

My 30 Days To Fabulous diet and exercise regimen isn't going as well as planned but I really don't feel so bad because this has been one SWEET weekend, literally! Last night I dined at La Terrazza to celebrate my best friend's graduation. I had the duck confit salad, properly known as Insalata Mista Con Anatra [which I eat every single time I go], uno glass of white vino [that's not to mention the bottle we split prior] and shared La Creazione. All, beyond delicious! And currently, at this moment in time on my Saturday night, I have chosen to stay in and enjoy yet another pot [or two... or three...] of Murchie's Jasmine Pure tea and Ultimate Dessert Truffles. Although this is a very unorthodox way for me to spend my Saturday night, I am quite enjoying this time I get to spend with yours truly, casually getting some work done, all the while meandering through various websites scouting out my next purchases. Oh, and I have some "The Naked And Famous" playing in the background. I'll start again tomorrow.
